Detractors of fashion frequently suggest that fashion is all about gay male fashion designers who, because they’re gay, hate women, and design clothes for women who look like little boys. This idea was first put forward by Edmund Bergler in his book Fashion and the Unconscious, published in 1953, and is showing no signs of going away.
As concepts go, it’s a winning combination of homophobic, misogynist, and just plain wrong. I’ll address the homophobia and the misogyny in other posts. For now, next time someone tells you fashion designers are all gay men, tell them this:
